In this post I’ll be walking you through three different ways you can use Ball’s pressure canned meal in a jar, Chicken and Gravy. This savory and satisfying meal in a jar is so easy to can at home and even easier to use in your day-to-day cooking.
What is Chicken and Gravy?
How To Pressure Can Chicken and Gravy at Home
Recipe #1: Making Chicken and Gravy over Biscuits
Once you have this beautiful meal in a jar on your pantry shelves there are so many recipes you can create with it.
This Chicken and Gravy is a great start to many filling meals like the three I’m sharing here with you today.
My first recipe is one of our favorites and one I highly recommend if you enjoy comfort food like I do. It can be ready in about 30 to 45 minutes and you’re going to be glad you tried it.
Here’s How You Prepare the Chicken and Gravy:
- Dump your jar or jars of chicken and gravy into a large heavy-bottomed pot (I love this beautiful pot!). While the mixture is still cold, add in a couple extra cups of chicken broth mixed with two or three tablespoons of flour and mix it thoroughly.
- Turn the heat on medium-high and bring to a simmer until it has thickened to your desired consistency.
- While your chicken in gravy is simmering bake some biscuits or make some toast to serve your chicken and gravy over when it is cooked.
- Serve and enjoy!
I love to serve our plain chicken and gravy over low-carb biscuits or my favorite chaffles but you can mix up your favorite biscuit or even toast to serve this over and trust me it will be amazing.
Recipe #2: Creamy Chicken Pot Pie with Drop Topping
I’m sure if you’ve watched my video on how I canned this Chicken and Gravy meal in a jar on my YouTube channel you’ve thought that this would make a wonderful pot pie and boy were you right!
Just like the Beef Stroganoff that I shared with you a while back these jars of chicken, veggies, and broth are super easy to mix up into a fabulous filling for pot pies,
But to switch it up for you I’m going to walk you through making a pot pie this time with some yummy drop biscuits instead of a pie crust like we did in the beef pot pie.
Here’s how to turn Chicken and Gravy Into Pot Pie:
- Just like the recipe above, this pot pie starts with opening two jars of chicken and gravy and thickening it up. But first, add some veggies
- Once you have your chicken and gravy in the pot, add in some of your favorite veggies. I usually add one cup of frozen corn, one cup of frozen peas, and carrots. But you can add in your favorites.
- While the mixture is still cold, add in a couple extra cups of chicken broth mixed with two or three tablespoons of flour and mix it thoroughly.
- Turn the heat on medium-high and bring to a simmer until it has thickened to your desired consistency.
- Once your pot pie filling is as thick as you’d like it add it to a large baking dish and set it aside.
- Next, mix up a simple drop biscuit like this one and drop spoonfuls all over the top of the pot pie filling.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes or until your biscuits are cooked through.
- Serve and enjoy!
Recipe #3 Creamy Chicken and Rice Soup
This third recipe I’m going to offer you for the Ball Chicken and Gravy Meal in a Jar is my Creamy Chicken and Rice Soup.
This soup is so good you guys, it is thick, rich, and the perfect bowl full of food on those cold winter events.
This soup comes together in less than 45 minutes and could not be more simple. It is a dump-and-go type of soup and worth a try.
I’ve got the whole recipe written out for you below in a printable recipe card because I want you to give this one a try.
I love to use white rice when I make this for guests or when I take it to church but you can swap that out for brown rice if you would like.
I am not a fan of instant rice so I don’t use it, but if you want to cut your cook time down on this soup you can use the instant rice and just cook it per the recommendations on the back of the package you use.
The great thing about this soup is that it is gluten-free for anyone that is needing that type of recipe in your family. There is no thickening needed for this soup if you use rice because the grain does all that for you during the cooking process.
This soup is one I make often and it goes fast at church potlucks!
Can I make Creamy Chicken and Rice Soup Low Carb?
As the recipe is written in the carb below it is not a low-carb soup due to the addition of the rice. However, it would be super simple to lower the carb count with a quick swap.
Since the Chicken and Gravy recipe in the jar has some potatoes this wouldn’t fall into the Keto realm, however, there are only a few potatoes in each jar so it can work okay for most of us.
What I do is swap out the white rice for cauliflower rice to lower our carbs on days we are looking for a lighter meal.
In these cases, I cook the soup just as it states in the recipe card, except I skip the part where it says add the white rice and cook for 22-25 minutes.
When it gets to that part I add the bag of thawed cauliflower rice and let it simmer for 5 minutes to cook the cauliflower.
Then I would thicken it with a low carb thickener if it was needed. It is every bit as delicious to us when we use the cauliflower rice so I’ll let you choose your favorite!
